The State Of Usability In 2023 by Vitaly Friedman
The first article in the business analysis digest and the first article of the year I have read… Ironically, it is not about business analysis at all. Which does not make it less great! This article is dedicated to sharing the result of a few personal observations Vitalii had during 2022. It is related to users’ behavior concerning the usage of interfaces – both frustrations and delighters. I agree with Vitalii that there is probably nothing new that you can find here, but put the basics together. At the same time, these observations provide us with an excellent high-level view and a cheat sheet of do’s/don’ts in 2023. Also, this article is a perfect example of a message I find the most satisfying in the professional literature: brief, concrete, practical.

It is a sequel to The Most 6 Important Requirements Practices from 2022. Like the previous one, this article was adapted from Karl’s forthcoming book Software Requirements Essentials: Core Practices for Successful Business Analysis (which is insanely great separate news, by the way; I totally missed that). Experienced business analysts might think, “duh, I know that, ” which would be true as these practices are primarily basics. But I cannot stress how often I see even mature experts overlooking or not using simple but essential techniques. It always leads to problems and wastes a lot of time and resources to be fixed. These practices are pure gold, and I highly recommend everybody to learn or refresh them.

Developing requirements for an internal or local project, when you have physical access to everyone and could get up, go to another floor, and discuss an issue, could still be a colossal mess and unpredictable result. Now amplify this risk by working in different time zones, with a distributed team and limited communication possibilities, and you get the idea of what may happen. In this article, Karl shares a few thoughts which should help business analysts working in such conditions, like how to find an appropriate level of requirements precision, how to build interactions with stakeholders and the importance of establishing change management and acceptance criteria.
How Practitioners Create Journey Maps: Typical Uses, Roles, and Methods by Kate Kaplan
I was usually skeptical when the discussion around the Customer Journey Maps started. Mainly because it’s an additional artifact that requires much time to build and support. That’s while CJM is not that different from the story mapping technique, which focuses more on the product scope regarding user flow, features, and processes. Yes, I know that CJM is about something else, but still. Thanks to this article from NN Group, I got a few insights on how other practitioners use CJM. It really made me rethink my position towards CJM, at least to try it one more time.

Перша стаття в дайджесті бізнес-аналітики та перша стаття року, що я прочитав… За іронією долі, вона зовсім не про бізнес-аналіз. Що не робить її менш чудовою! Ця стаття присвячена тому, щоб поділитися результатами кількох особистих спостережень Віталія протягом 2022 року. Вони пов’язані з поведінкою користувачів щодо використання інтерфейсів – як їх розчарувань, так і моментів що викликають захоплення. Я згоден з Віталієм, що, мабуть, нічого нового тут не знайдеш, крім разом узятих давно відомих проблем. Проте, ці спостереження дають нам чудову картину на високому рівні та шпаргалку щодо того, що можна/не можна робити у 2023 році. Крім того, ця стаття є чудовим прикладом “месседжу”, який я вважаю найбільш коректним у профільній літературі: коротко, конкретно, практично .

Як і попередня, ця стаття була адаптована з майбутньої книги Карла Software Requirements Essentials: Core Practices for Successful Business Analysis (до речі, це шалено чудова окрема новина; я зовсім пропустив її). Досвідчені бізнес-аналітики можуть подумати: «Ой, я це знаю», і це таки є правдою, оскільки ці практики є перш за все основами. Але я не можу не наголосити, як часто я бачу навіть зрілих експертів, які пропускають або не використовують прості, але важливі техніки. Це завжди призводить до проблем і витрачає багато часу та ресурсів на їх вирішення. Ці практики є чистим золотом, і я настійно рекомендую всім вивчити або оновити знання щодо них.

Зазвичай я був налаштований скептично, коли почалася дискусія навколо карти подорожі клієнту. Головним чином тому, що це додатковий артефакт, який вимагає багато часу для створення та підтримки. При цьому CJM не дуже відрізняється від техніки сторі маппінгу, яка більше зосереджується на скоупі продукту, інформації щодо юзер флоу, функцій та процесів. Так, я знаю, що CJM про щось інше, але все ж. Проте, завдяки цій статті від NN Group я отримав кілька уявлень про те, як інші практики використовують CJM. Це дійсно змусило мене переглянути мою позицію щодо CJM, принаймні спробувати ще раз.
