In this episode of the Passionate Business Analyst podcast, my guest is Stefan Bossuwé, an authority on holistic business analysis. Stefan is a speaker, coach, trainer, and mentor for business analysts. Passionate about business analysis, in 2009, Stefan founded the IIBA® Brussels Chapter with a small group of BA enthusiasts, where he was appointed to Chapter President, where he remained for ten years. He’s currently still very active as the Chapter’s Ambassador.

This video discusses this approach and how it applies to business analysts’ daily work. We define the holistic part of business analysis, discuss its application, and share our experiences. This advanced session is recommended for Intermediate business analysts due to its somewhat philosophical nature (but not a blocker, of course). Enjoy the ride, and comment on what you think about this episode.

Holistic Business Analysis: Seeing the Big Picture

In today’s fast-paced business world, understanding how all parts of a company work together is crucial. This is where Holistic Business Analysis comes in. It’s an approach that looks at a business as a whole rather than focusing on individual parts. Let’s explore why this method is gaining popularity and how it can help companies to thrive.

Imagine trying to understand how a car works. You could look at each part separately – the engine, the wheels, the steering wheel. But to understand the vehicle, you must see how all these parts work together. Holistic Business Analysis does the same thing for businesses. It looks at how different departments, processes, and people interact to make the company run.

Why Do We Need It?

  1. Spotting Hidden Problems: By looking at the whole picture, we can find hidden connections and solve problems more effectively;
  2. Making Better Decisions: Leaders can make choices that benefit the entire company, not just one department;
  3. Improving Teamwork: This approach helps everyone see how their work fits into the bigger picture, leading to better communication and cooperation;
  4. Adapting to Change: Holistic analysis helps companies see how changes in one area might affect others, making adapting easier;
  5. Finding New Opportunities: Businesses can spot new ways to improve or grow by understanding how everything works together.

How Does Holistic Business Analysis Work?

Holistic Business Analysis involves looking at various aspects of a company, including how departments work together, the flow of information and resources, customer experiences, company goals, and external factors. Analysts use tools like interviews, surveys, and data analysis to create a big-picture view of the company.

Many companies have found success with this approach. For example, a retail store improved its customer service by seeing how inventory, staffing, and marketing all affected the shopping experience. A manufacturing company reduced waste and increased efficiency by looking at how different production stages affected each other.

While holistic analysis can be very helpful, it does require time and effort. However, for many businesses, the benefits of seeing the big picture are well worth it. By taking a holistic view, companies can stay competitive and successful in an increasingly connected world.
