What is the RACI Matrix?
A RACI Matrix is an indispensable tool for business analysts in software systems and web development. RACI stands for Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed – the key roles each person takes during the project. In this video, you will learn how to create a matrix, as this is a simple tutorial. You will also learn the types of the RACI chart: Task-Person, Task-Role, and Person-Role.
RACI Matrix Example
The Task-Person matrix illustrates which people have which relation to which task, defining the responsibility zones in the project. For instance, a business analyst is responsible for creating requirements but the project manager may be accountable for the result as the project lead. Different people, like designers, developers, quality assurance experts, and others, have different responsibilities regarding other project tasks and may be consulted or informed about the results. So as you see, this artifact helps describe what each project role should do within their responsibility zones.
Matrix Variants
The Task-Person matrix shows RACI roles for each project member and focuses on showing who has which role. In this way, having roles at the intersection can easily show the job description of each person within a given project.
The Task-Role matrix focuses on showing which person has which role for each of the tasks. It is useful from the point of view of processes existing in a project.
Lastly, the Person-Role focuses on tasks instead of people.
